A coding method for performing compression/coding of a moving picture by using a motion compensation prediction so as to code or decode motion information in video with a small overhead.The method includes a motion compensation prediction step(processing performed by a motion detector(2),a motion compensation unit(5),and a space prediction unit(9))for assigning one or more motion vectors(for example,two motion vectors at the most)on basis of sub−blocks into which macro blocks of a moving picture frame are divided,thereby performing a motion compensation prediction and an assigning information coding step(processing performed by a variable length coding unit(23))for multiplexing information on the motion vector assignment for the sub−blocks with a bit stream and outputting it.
