A flood defence system for a building 11 comprises a flood shield having a stowed position in which the shield is arranged adjacent the building for deployment and a deployed position in which the flood shield is deployed around at least vulnerable aspects of the building. The base of the flood shield being in sealing relationship with a sealing arrangement, which may comprise a grooved track 21, at ground level of the building. The flood shield may comprise a flexible sheet 12 stored on a roller in a box (13, Fig 1) sealingly mounted on a wall of the building. On deployment the sheet may be pulled from the box along the length of a wall or completely around a detached building, the bottom edge running along the grooved track, the end of the sheet 16 remote from the box then being locked into a receiver 15, also mounted on the building wall. |
