PURPOSE: An adaptive algorithm for the equalizer of a multicarrier receiver is provided to reduce manufacturing cost and to process digital data by using a division operation. CONSTITUTION: A method for initializing an equalizer in an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing ("OFDM") receiver, the method characterized by the steps of: generating a channel estimate (220) based at least in part on an OFDM signal; generating an approximate inverse (230, 240, 250) of the channel estimate; and generating a desired equalizer tap setting (260) based on an adaptive algorithm; wherein an initial equalizer tap setting for the adaptive algorithm corresponds to the approximate inverse of the channel estimate and the desired equalizer tap setting corresponds to an ideal inverse of the channel estimate.
