摘要 PURPOSE: The impact absorbing structure of a steering column is provided to minimize the injury of drivers by an upper and lower tube regulating variably intervals through absorbing efficiently the impact force of collision accidents. CONSTITUTION: The structure for the impact absorbing of a steering column is composed of an upper tube(11) of which the rim forming a flange(11a) facing the center of a pipe at regular intervals. A lower tube(12) forms the flange(12a) facing outside a pipe on the rim inserted inside the upper tube, the flange is superposed with the flange of the upper tube at regular intervals. An impact detecting sensor(61) detects the impact force of collision accidents. A distance detecting sensor(62) detects a gap between the flanges of the lower and upper tube according to the impact force of accidents and the reaction force of drivers. An Electric Control Unit(63;ECU) discriminates whether the collision accident of a vehicle happens or not by analyzing signals delivered from the impact detecting sensor and the distance detecting sensor, and decides the injury of drivers for the impact force. A generator(64) produces magnetic field on the flanges to regulate intervals between the flanges by the control of the ECU, and originates magnetic field to the flanges to control steering angle by a steering wheel according to the ECU. Intervals between the flanges of the lower and upper tube are automatically regulated by the strength of magnetic field from the generator according to the impact force of accidents and the reaction force of drivers.
