The method involves using a Pockel crystal (12) into which at least a first polarised light beam (4) is coupled. The first light beam, which emerges from the crystal is redirected by the same number of rectangular reflections in a couple orthogonal reflection planes and coupled again into the crystal. Preferably, two polarised light beam (4,6) are coupled into the crystal which are phase shifted relative to each other about an odd multiple of lambda/4 outside of the crystal.
