PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for driving a liquid crystal display device are provided to adaptively meet the response speed of the liquid crystal display device required for each driving frequency by setting a reference modulation data and by adjusting the reference modulation data in response to the driving frequency, thereby implementing an optimum high speed driving operation at a display device with changing the driving frequency thereof. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for driving a liquid crystal display device includes a liquid crystal panel crossing a data line and a gate line, a data driver for supplying the data to the data line of the liquid crystal panel, a gate driver for supplying a scanning pulse to the gate line of the liquid crystal panel, a timing controller for supplying a digital video data and a synchronizing signal, a mode detector for detecting the frequency of the digital video data and a data modulation block for adjusting the modulation data previously set in response to the frequency of the digital video data. The data modulation block includes a frame memory(63) inputted thereto the most significant bit(MSB), a reference look-up table(64) for taking out the reference modulation data(LRef) by comparing the most significant bit(MSB) between the previous frame and the current frame and an operation(65) for adjusting the reference modulation data(LRef) in response to the frequency detection signal(F).
