A conveyer for bringing radio-active samples in succession to a radiation counter comprises a chain 1 driven by teeth 2 on gear-wheels 3, 4, 5 rotating about vertical axes. A motor 7 drives a gear-wheel 4a coaxially secured to the wheel 4, teeth 8 on the wheel 4a meshing with teeth 9, 10 on gear-wheels 3a, 5a coaxially secured to the wheels 3, 5. Further toothed wheels 11, 12 guide the chain 1. The motor 7 drives the chain in step-wise motion through a chamber 15 in front of a shielding chamber 16 having a radiation counter 20. Sample cups 17 are carried at equal intervals on the chain and rest in shallow depressions on its upper side. As each cup 17 arrives at the front of the chamber 16 the chain stops and a rectilinearly-guided forked member 18 moves forward to lift the cup from the chain and slide it into the chamber. At the same time two resilient members 18a projecting from the member 18 engage two apertures 19a in a slidable member 19 whereby the member 19 is pushed backwards in the chamber 16. When the sample cup 17 has remained beneath the counter 20 for a predetermined time the member 18 is retracted and taken with it the member 19, the latter returning the cup to the chain. Further movement of the member 19 is prevented by stops 16a so that as the member 18 continues its movement it becomes uncoupled from the member 19 by the disengagement of the members 18a from the apertures 19a. The chain 1 is now driven a further step and the cycle repeats. In modifications (Figs. 4-7, not shown), pairs of chains driven in synchronism and arranged side-by-side or one above the other are employed. |
