PURPOSE: A method for controlling an engine is provided to prevent back fire and to prevent harmful exhaust gas from being discharged to an exterior by controlling the engine through detecting misfire. CONSTITUTION: An engine R.P.M of a hybrid electric vehicle is detected(S214). The detected engine R.P.M of the hybrid electric vehicle is compared with a predetermined engine R.P.M(S216). If the detected engine R.P.M of the hybrid electric vehicle is less than the predetermined engine R.P.M, a motoring torque order is calculated(S218). Then, misfire of the engine is detected(S220). If the engine is in a misfire state, the misfire state is counted(S222). The counting value is compared with a predetermined reference value(S224). If the counting value exceeds the predetermined reference value, misfire of the engine is displayed(S226).
