PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device for swiftly replacing the existing main rope with a new main rope and a method for such replacement using the device. SOLUTION: The old rope wound on the hoisting machine of the cantilever sheave type is slackened, one end of the rope is wound on the main rope winder, and the other end is connected to one end of the new rope. A main rope guide to rotate via a roller rotating on the outer circumferential surface of the sheave is installed on the sheave, to move freely carrying the old rope wound thereon. The old rope is wound up, and the new rope is wound out. The new rope thus follows the old rope before it is installed replacing the old rope.
