PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a buttonhole sewing machine which facilitates the cutting of a part of a buttonhole sandwiched between a needle and a cutter when the bar tacking length per buttonholing stitch is shorter. SOLUTION: In the buttonhole sewing machine 1 for buttonholing, when a material to be sewn is set on the machine 1, if the addition of the bar tacking length and the second clearance length is less than the length of the portion sandwiched between the needle 9 and the cutter 16, a cloth feeding plate 14 is moved based on a calculated value before the start of the buttonholing. Actuators 66 and 76 for driving upper and lower cloth clippers 52 and 80 are so arranged as to drive the clippers and the cloth feeding plate 14 to operate independently.
