843,627. Fluorescent lighting units. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO. Ltd. April 10, 1957 [April 19, 1956], No. 11985/56. Class 75(4). A fluorescent lighting unit comprises an elongated trough shaped casing housing refractors on its opposite side walls, a top cover and means for supporting fluorescent tubes of the type including a coating on the surface of the tube extending over a longitudinal zone which reduces the light intensity over that zone but increases it over another longitudinal zone, the zones of increased intensity being directed to shine light through casing and refractors so that the major part of the illumination is directed outwards and downwards. The fitting may comprise a shallow cover 2 provided with an enlargement 4 to receive the end of a supporting member 3 in the form of a tube, and a transparent trough shaped casing 1 secured to the cover by a frame 7. Three fluorescent tubes 13, 14, 19 are supported within the casing, each having a part 23 coated with material reflecting ultra-violet light e.g. over an arc of slightly more than 180 degrees and are arranged so that the major part of the increased light from the uncoated zones 24 falls on refractors 31 and 32 in the case of the tubes 13, 14 and a pair of refractors 36, 37 in the case of the tube 19. Refractors 36, 37 may be replaced by a reflector of elongated V-shape and reflectors may also be used in addition to the reflectors 31 and 32. |
