A piston (30) for a disc brake acting on a brake plate (36) comprises a body made of a vitreous or vitro ceramic material principally including silica. The surface of the piston body is partially covered with a protective layer (37) to reinforce the rigidity of the piston and/or improve sealing between the piston and a joint (39) placed on the protective layer. An Independent claim is also included for a method of fabricating the disc brake piston.
