The planetary gear set for a motor vehicle starter has a reduction ring gear formed of a fixed outer sleeve (31) and movable inner toothed gear crown (32). There are shock absorbing inserts between the inner and outer parts formed of plates fitting into seatings in the opposing faces of the sleeve and crown. Each seating has a depth which increases in a relative angular displacement direction between the ring gear sections.
