PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of obtaining an excellent image by performing appropriate shading. SOLUTION: In this image reader provided with a housing including a platen for placing an original thereon, a contact image sensor 506 (read means) for scanning and reading an image of the original placed on the platen, and a driving means (stepping motor 513) for moving the contact image sensor 506 for scanning, shading is performed while the contact image sensor 506 is moved in the direction opposite to the subscanning direction.
