PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium consisting of a thin maghemite film having a high coercive force, a small average grain size and an excellent grain size distribution. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium consisting of a substrate, a ground surface film formed on this substrate and the thin maghemite film of 6 to 50 nm in film thickness (t) formed on the ground surface film consists of a magnetic recording medium of 5 to 30 nm in the average particle diameter (D) of the thin maghemite film, <1, 0 in the ratio (D/t) of the average particle diameter (D) to the film thickness (t) of the thin maghemite film, <=4 nm in the standard deviation of the particle diameter, and >=159 kA/m (2,000 Oe) in the coercive force.
