PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and method for summarizing video information that can adjust a digest reproduction time and provide digest information by which an operator can more properly grasp video information. SOLUTION: A summary reproducing apparatus 100 includes a detection unit 103 for detecting silent and noise sections based on information on sound waveforms of inputted audio/video information, and a control unit 107 for deciding digest segments to be extracted while controlling a reproduction unit 106 based on the digest segments. The control unit 107 sets the digest segments and the importance of each of the digest segments based on the time-base position and/or section length of each of the silent and noise sections in the audio/ video information. Based on the set importance of each of the digest segments, the control unit 107 then controls the reproduction unit 106 to reproduce a digest of the audio/video information.
