Erection of a gravestone comprises connecting a gravestone plate (1) to a foundation using a transverse bar. At least one vertical cylindrical bore is drilled to the required depth using a ground borer on both sides of the location of the gravestone plate. A pillar (4) having a carrying ring (3) screwed in the upper end is sunk into the bore using a crane device. After adjustment, the space remaining between the pillar and the bore wall is filled with earth washed in using a high pressure water jet. After removal of the carrying ring the visible gravestone elements are arranged on the column by means of transverse bars and/or longitudinal bars (5) using the ring fixings. Preferred Features: The pillars consist of an elongated body having a round, oval, or 4-, 5- or 6-sided cross-section and provided at least on one end with a recess for a carrying ring.
