An electromagnetic actuator (300) including a coil (323) disposed about a tube (327) bearing a movable armature (326), the coil (327) being electrically connectable to a circuit (160) configured to provide a current to the coil (327) to generate a magnetic field and magnetic flux in at least one direction. The movable armature (326) is magnetically coupleable with the coil (323). A flux adjustment element (700) is also provided and is configured for movement within a magnetic flux output by the coil (323) so as to increase a magnetic flux input to the armature (326) upon movement of the flux adjustment element (700) in a first direction and to decrease a magnetic flux input to the armature upon movement of the flux adjustment element (700) in a second direction, wherein the flux adjustment element (700) is externally disposed about a distal end of the tube.
