PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which can suppress heat generation of a motor and a driver without providing a cooling fan or a heat radiation plate and contributes to reduction in the cost. SOLUTION: This image reader in which a light source and a reflecting mirror constituting a scanning optical system are driven by a driver and a motor, is provided with an electric power integrating means for accumulating each of electric power necessary for moving operation of the light source and the reflecting mirror, and a control means for providing a first threshold with respect to the electric power integrated by the electric power integrating means and for performing control to reduce the average current of the motor during the returning operation of the light source and the reflecting mirror when the electric power surpasses the first threshold.
