PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader that can reduce its occupied area and stably carry even a thick flexible but hard sheet. SOLUTION: A sheet P contained in a tilted sheet container section 3 is carried on a first sheet carrying path R1 vertically extended up to image read sections 8, 9, the image read sections 8, 9 read an image of the sheet P and the sheet P whose image is read is discharged to a horizontal discharge paper stack section 14 through a second sheet carrying path R2 extended nearly horizontally. Then the image read section 9 is placed between the first carrying path R1 vertically extended and the second sheet carrying path R2 extended nearly horizontally, and the image read section 9 changes the carrying direction of the sheet P passing through the first carrying path R1 toward the second sheet carrying path R2.
