PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive high-speed image reader by using the same drive to control paper feeding and paper discharge so as to decrease an inter- original interval during carrying. SOLUTION: This invention provides the image reader characterized to comprise an original detection means for detecting whether or not an original before reading exists, a carrying means capable of discharging a first original fed onto a carrying path and feeding a second original onto the carrying path before the end of paper discharge upon the receipt of a scan instruction, a read means for reading an original on the carrying path, and a control means for controlling the carrying means to stay the original on the carrying path when the original detection means detects presence of the original until the scan instruction is received and to discharge the original on the carrying path without staying the original thereon when absence of the original is detected.
