A simple jig for setting the spacing up the uprights for a metal banister system has two telescopic sections each provided with a gripping slot to align the spacing the uprights. The shaped slots are secured onto the uprights using grub screws. The maximum extension of the jig is for a 150 mm spacing of the uprights. The selected spacing is secured by a screw fastener to lock the sections together. The inner telescopic section is provided with a graduated scale to set the spacing.
