A CPU 300 divides an image into a plurality of sections, creates the respective histograms of the sections, determines a luminance average Yave by calculation, determines the focus position on the image by using focus position information, sets the section in the determined position to an important section, sets the luminance average Yave of the important section to a luminance criterion value Ystd, determines a nonuse section on the basis of the set luminance criterion value Ystd, calculates, by using the sections other than the nonuse section, an image quality adjustment luminance average Y'ave which reflects the weights W depending on the positions of the sections and is the luminance average of the whole image, and corrects the lightness by using the calculated image quality adjustment luminance average Y'ave.
