The clamping unit is fixed onto the outer circumference of the pipe end. Pipe end and bush are axially-aligned. Axial force is then applied between clamp and bush using an introduction unit. The pipe end is pushed onto the bush up to a final position. Preferably a further press-fitted bush is pushed onto the pipe end, over the region where the supportive bush is located. The order of assembly may be reversed, and the clamp is removed on completion. A variant based on the foregoing principles is described. Salient features of the equipment include a hinged, segmented clamping unit, and use of hydraulic force in the pressing operations. Independent claims are included for the clamping- and introduction units used in the process.
