An ignition starter switch for a motor vehicle, comprising an actuating member (1) which is used for manually starting and stopping the engine. When the actuating member (1) is moved out of an initial position in order to start the engine, a locking bolt (4) of a controllable locking device (3) acts upon said actuating member (1) in order to prevent the actuating member (1) from returning to its initial position, whereby the locking thereof is released so that the actuating member (1) can return to its initial position according to a control command which is independent of the actuation of said actuating member (1), and part of the locking device (3) is embodied in the form of a stop arrangement which can be overcome by means of a predetermined force, against which the locking bolt (4) of the locking device (3) acts when the actuating member (1) is moved out of its initial position to start the engine in order to prevent the actuating member (1) from returning to its initial position. According to the invention, the locking bolt (4) is moveably mounted with two degrees of freedom. According to one degree of freedom, the locking bolt (1) can be actuated by the actuating device (7). According to the other degree of freedom, a return release device (9), which can be overcome by means of force, acts upon the locking bolt (1).
