PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably record and reproduce micro-magnetic domains formed by an optical pulse magnetic field modulation recording method. SOLUTION: The magneto-optical recording medium 1a has at least a reproducing layer 4 consisting of a perpendicularly magnetized film and a recording layer 6 consisting of a perpendicularly magnetized film. The reproducing layer 4 and the recording layer 6 face each other and are magnetostatically coupled to each other. Total magnetization 32 of the reproducing layer 4 and total magnetization 30 of the recording layer 6 increase with an increase in temperature and the magnetization state of the recording layer 6 is transferred to the reproducing layer 4 by accompanying the irradiation with a light beam 17. The total magnetization 32 of the reproducing layer 4 and the total magnetization 30 of the recording layer 6 are maximized in a reproducing temperature range.
