PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an economical and efficient recording/reproducing device wherein, even when track bending occurs during recording or compatible reproducing, another track of a similar azimuth is not reproduced. SOLUTION: Recording/reproducing is carried out by an STD mode for recording/reproducing performed by alternately using rotary heads H2 and H4 continuously to from tracks at track pitches smaller than the track widths of the rotary heads H2, H4 on a magnetic tape, and an HD-LP mode for intermittent recording/reproducing by sequentially and cyclically using rotary heads H4, H1, H2, H3 in this order so as to form tracks at track pitches smaller than the track widths of the rotary heads H1 to H4 on the magnetic tape. On the HD-LP mode, the recording/reproducing is carried out at the rate of one per rotations of N times the half rotation of a rotary drum RD (N is an odd number larger than 1). Recording/reproducing is also carried out on the HD mode simultaneously using two of H1 to H4.
