The invention relates to insoluble organic compounds containing one or more aryl vinylene ketone groups, for screening out UV radiation, in the form of fine particles with an average size of between 10 nm and 5 mum, and also to their use for protecting the skin, the hair or materials that are sensitive to UV radiation. The said compounds may be obtained by a process of grinding coarse particles in the presence of one or more suitable surfactants.
