PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically select a more optimum spanning tree in switches for supporting a multiple spanning tree protocol and a bridged network constituted by the switches. SOLUTION: Each switch includes a default spanning tree in multiple spanning trees. When a frame having an individual destination address is received from a terminal, an inquiry frame is transmitted to the destination terminal of the individual destination address by way of the default spanning tree. When the inquiry frame is received, an inquiry response frame is transmitted to the whole spanning trees when the destination terminal is connected and, then, the optimum spanning tree is selected based on information from the inquiry response frames from the whole spanning trees.
