PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic memory device which makes recording and reproducing of high-density information possible and has high reliability. SOLUTION: This magnetic memory device has an intra-surface magnetic recording medium which is formed with magnetic layers across a plurality of ground surface layers on a nonmagnetic substrate and in which the magnetic layers consist of a lower magnetic layer containing >=3 to <=30 at.% Ru or Re and containing >=0 to <=18 at.% Cr and further containing >=0 to <=20 at.% at least either of B or C and an upper magnetic layer essentially consisting of Co arranged across a nonmagnetic intermediate layer, a driving section which drives this magnetic recording medium in a recording direction, a combined magnetic head which has a reproducing section comprising a spin valve sensor, means which drives the magnetic head relatively to the magnetic recording medium and recording and reproducing signal processing means which inputs the signals to the magnetic head and reproduces the output signals from the magnetic head.
