PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-capacity battery ensuring safety and a long service life. SOLUTION: A sealed alkaline primary battery has separator paper 3 for isolating a positive electrode mix 2 from a gelled negative electrode 4 obtained when alloy powders composed chiefly of zinc are dispersed in an alkaline electrolyte, the positive mix 2 having particles of a nickel hydroxide compound as positive electrode active material. The separator paper uses cellulose fibers showing liquid retentivity, and vinylon fibers and polyvinyl alcohol fibers both of which show alkali resistance, the mass ratio of the cellulose fibers to the vinylon and polyvinyl alcohol fibers ranging from 35:65 to 75:25. The liquid retention rate of the separator paper ranges from 400 to 600 mass%.
