The individual musical notes 1/1, 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8 are represented by small wooden or plastic plates with different sizes, so that the note 1/1 is represented by one plate, the note 1/2 by two plates, the note 1/4 with four plates and the note 1/8 with eight plates. The sizes of the plates are chosen so that when all the plates for each note are combined together, their width will be equal to that of all the plates combined together for the next note. Each plate is marked with the particular note it represents.
