The present invention relates to a method for making an indolopyrrolocarbazole compound of the general formula [I] , where the method includes the step of reacting a bisindolylmaleimide compound with an oxidizing agent in the presence of an oxygen containing gas at a temperature and for a time sufficient to yield the indolopyrrolocarbazole compound of the general formula [I]. Methods of making rebeccamycin analogs using the indolopyrrolocarbazole compound are also provided.
