PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a starting device for an engine capable of achieving an excellent engaging of a pinion and a ring gear and reducing impact and impact sound greatly when the pinion engages with the ring gear. SOLUTION: When a start switch 2 is turned on, electric power is supplied to a first coil 110 by a battery 1. A first movable core 134 is attracted and the pinion 14 is moved to the direction of the ring gear 18 through a lever 17. When the pinion 14 abuts on the ring gear 18, an elasticity means 137 bends and urges to press. Afterward, time t1 until the pinion 14 engages with the ring gear 18 fully and deeply is timed by a timer means 20. After time t1 passes, the current of the battery is supplied to a second coil 210 and a second movable core 230 is attracted. Electric current is supplied to a starting generator 10 from the battery 1 by shutting a main contact point 9. On the other hand, the current is controlled to the starting generator 10 by a current control means 30 so as to rotate the starting generator 10 in low speed from the beginning of the energization to the first coil 110 to the shutting of the main contact point 9.
