PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate a delay of the recording of a generated external signal behind the generation of the external signal from an external device when a CPU is in a high-load state. SOLUTION: A scanning laser microscope is equipped with a confocal scanner 2 which scans a sample with a light beam in two dimensions, an optical detector 5 which detects light from the sample, an A/D converter 7 which converts the output signal from the optical detector 5 into a digital signal, the CPU 9 which controls the scanner 2 and generates image data on the sample from the digital signal outputted from the A/D converter 7, a display device 11 which displays the generated image data, a detector 15 which outputs the external signal, and a data recording device 14 which is connected to the detector 15 and records the external signal and the time when the external signal is outputted when the external signal is outputted, etc,; and the CPU 9 reads out the data recorded by the data recording device 14.
