PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording medium identifying device having improved accuracy of identifying a recording medium. SOLUTION: A diffuse reflected light receiving sensor 4 and a regularly reflected light component receiving sensor 3 are arranged to satisfyα<θ,β>θ, namelyβ>α, whereθis an incident angle of a light emitting element 2 to the recording medium 1,αis an angle between the optical axis of a light received by the diffuse reflected light receiving sensor 4 and a main light beam (an optical axis) of a light flux from the light emitting element 2, andβis an angle between the optical axis of the light received by the diffuse reflected light receiving sensor 4 and the optical axis of a light received by the regularly reflected light component receiving sensor 3.
