PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new and safe humectant having skin ameliorating effects with time and a cosmetic composition effective for prophylaxis and treatment of skin roughening or dry skin and further capable of imparting gloss and firmness to the skin. SOLUTION: This humectant comprises a fermentation metabolite obtained by mixed culture of a lactic acid bacterium Lactobacillus brevis TY414 or Lactobacillus brevis IFO12005 or the Lactobacillus brevis IFO12005 with a lactic acid bacterium Lactobacillus delbrueckii bulgaricus TY393 or Lactobacillus delbrueckii bulgaricus IFO13953. Furthermore, the cosmetic composition comprises the humectant formulated therein.
