PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrophotographic photoreceptor having high durability and photosensitivity even for light of short wavelengths and to provide a method for manufacturing the photoreceptor at a low cost. SOLUTION: The electrophotographic photoreceptor has a ZnP-containing layer containing Zn and P or a ZnPN-containing layer containing Zn, P and N formed on a conductive substrate, and preferably, the photoreceptor contains an element which controls the conductivity characteristics in the above layers. In the method for manufacturing the photoreceptor, the ZnP-containing layer or the ZnPN-containing layer is formed by a (activated) vapor deposition method.
