Staining comprising microscope slides (6) for samples (5) which remain physically attached to the device during the staining procedure, is new. A device and a method for carrying out staining of a material in a manual laboratory as part of a histological, cytological, bacteriological, hermatological or immunological process uses an electronic system for advising the operative as to which reagents the device with the microscope slides with the material to be stained on them should be placed in during a given time period. The slides remain physically attached to the device.
