PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a compound step function response from the frequency response of a band-limited transmission channel. SOLUTION: The frequency band of a band-limited frequency response is down-shifted to a baseband to generate a baseband signal. The baseband signal is subjected to inverse Fourier transform to generate a time region signal. The time region signal is up-converted to generate a complex time region signal. Then, a DTF (distance to a trouble) signal is derived from the complex time region signal. An impulse response function is estimated according to the DTF signal and a window function, the impulse response function is accumulated, and the response of a step function is obtained.
