MATRIX DISPLAY AND ITS DRIVING METHOD

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a low-power display capable of multi-color display by combining a gradation expression system based on FRC and that based on a pulse width modulation method or a pulse height modulation method to suppress the rise of the frame rate caused by increase of the number of display gradations. SOLUTION: With respect to an M-bit video signal, N lower bits are used to perform gradation expression by the pulse width or pulse height modulation method in one frame, and M-N upper bits are used and 2<(> M<-> N<)> -1 frames are used to perform gradation display based on FRC, and thus the number of frames required for FRC is reduced to reduce the frame frequency, and gradation display of less flicker is realized with a low power.
