PURPOSE: A method for controlling an air conditioner is provided to improve heating operation performance by efficiently executing defrosting operation. CONSTITUTION: A method includes the steps of: a first step(200) detecting RPM of an outdoor fan motor on initial stage of heating operation and storing as reference; a second step(210,220) measuring temperature of an outdoor tube after executing heating operation for fixed time and determining whether the temperature is lower than fixed temperature(T1 deg.C); a third step(230) measuring current RPM of the outdoor fan motor if the condition of the second step is satisfied; a fourth step(240) comparing the current RPM with the reference and determining an outdoor unit is frosted if the current RPM is increased over fixed range; and a fifth step(260) executing defrosting operation if the outdoor unit is determined to be frosted.
