PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an olefin polymerization catalyst having an excellent olefin polymerization activity, and to provide a method for polymerizing an olefin in the presence of the catalyst. SOLUTION: The olefin polymerization catalyst comprises (A1) the reaction product of a compound represented by formula (a) with a metal compound represented by formula (e) or (A2) a transition metal compound represented by formula (I) [A is O, S, Se, or N(R<7> ); D is O, S, or Se; R<1> or R<7> are each H, a halogen, a hydrocarbon group, a silicon-containing group, or the like; M is a transition metal atom in the group 3 to 11 in the periodic table; (m) is an integer of 1 to 6; (k) is a number satisfying the valence of M; X is H, a halogen atom, a hydrocarbon group, or the like; (n) is a number satisfying the valence of M], and, if necessary, (B) at least one compound selected from the group consisting of an organic metal compound, an organic aluminumoxy compound and a compound which reacts with (A1) or (A2) to form an ion pair.
