PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a surface treated steel sheet which has excellent corrosion resistance by forming a chromium-free film. SOLUTION: In the method for producing a surface treated steel sheet having excellent corrosion resistance where electrolysis treatment with a steel sheet as the cathode is performed in an electrolytic solution, an aqueous solution containing metallic cations of one or more metals selected from Al, Mn, Mg, Zn, Ca and Ce by 0.001 to 3 mol/L total, oxygen acid ions containing P of 0.001 to 3 mol/L expressed in terms of P2 O5 , and a 0.001 to 2 mol/L oxidizer component, and in which the ratio between the molar concentration [A] expressed in terms of P2 O5 of the oxygen acid ions containing P and the molar concentration [B] of the metallic cations, i.e., [A]/[B] is 0.5 to 10 is used as the electrolytic solution.
