PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high strength steel wire which has high strength and sufficient ductility, and is therefore has excellent strain age embrittlement resistance and longitudinal crack resistance, and to provide a production method therefor. SOLUTION: The high strength carbon steel wire has chemical components containing, by mass, 0.75 to 1.20% C, 0.1 to 1.5% Si, 0.3 to 1.2% Mn, <=0.02% P, <=0.02% S, <=0.005% Al and <=0.008% N, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities, and has a worked pearlitic structure, and has a wire diameter D (mm) of 0.15 to 0.4 mm. Further, lamellar cementite in the structure is amorphous, and the surface layer is provided with a metallic lubricating film consisting of one kind of metal selected from Cu, Ni and Zn or the alloys of the same metals as the main phase, and, provided that C% is expressed by [C], its tensile strength satisfies 3500×D<-0.145> MPa to (3500×D<-0.145> +87×[C]<-5> ) MPa. |
