PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an easy to use, relatively inexpensive system capable of evaluating physical typological features, particularly the appearance characteristics of the skin or body hair, e.g. the complex radiation characteristics of the body hair such as luminance and color. SOLUTION: The system for determining physical typological characteristics, particularly the grades of the appearance characteristics of the skin or body hair, includes: a) (i) a chart including a plurality of reference images; or (ii) a means for displaying the reference images; and b) a portable optical instrument allowing direct observation of an area of the skin or body hair. The optical instrument has a means disposed to produce a suitable image of an area to be inspected in comparison with one of the reference images, under given illuminated conditions.
