[Also in Group XXVIII] A smoke hood adapted to encompass an electrode holder 7 of an open electric furnace comprises a housing member 1 provided with separate adjacently arranged slidable wall members 3, 4 mounted for telescopic movement above the furnace to permit raising and lowering of the wall members to expose and obturate the interior of the furnace. The hood is formed of metal, e.g. sheet iron, steel or aluminium, and the housing member 1 supports one or more flues 2 through which the smoke is exhausted by fans, blowers or steam ejectors, for example. The housing member 1 and wall members 3, 4 have ribs 1b thereon which limit the telescopic movement of the members and the hood is insulated from the holder 7 by a ring 8, e.g. of asbestos, ceramic material, mica or a phenol formaldehyde condensate. Movement of the wall members may be by pneumatic, hydraulic or motor-actuated mechanical means and they may have inspection windows therein, e.g. of mica, wire reinforced glass or metal fabric. The hood may be cooled by a medium such as water circulating through compartments therein or by water washing the entire outer surface thereof. The furnace may have any cross-sectional shape and be provided with several electrodes.</p> |
