PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electric vacuum cleaner capable of increasing a dust collecting capacity by compression of fibrous dust particularly, maintaining suction performance for a long time, and having a centrifugal dust collecting part (a cyclone dust collecting part) with improved usability. SOLUTION: The electric vacuum cleaner is provided with a dust collecting case 11 comprising a separating chamber 22 centrifuging dust, a first suction part 46 provided in the separating chamber 22, a dust holding chamber 24 communicating with the separating chamber 22 and holding dust, and a second suction part 49 provided in the dust holding chamber 24. An opening and closing means 104 is provided for opening and closing the first suction part 46. By closing communication of the first suction part 46 and increasing a suction amount passing the second suction part 49, dust gathered in the dust collecting case 11 is compressed and the usability can be improved.
