PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the need for a worker to reset the initial value of a down counter or he like of bobbin thread even if an object to be sewn is changed, and the buttonhole without causing bad sewing due to exhaustion of bobbin thread in a buttonholing machine. SOLUTION: The buttonholing machine has a counter portion 105 in a control panel 100. The counter portion is a down counter in which the number of buttonholes that can be sewn by bobbin thread wound around a bobbin is set as an initial value and that deducts the number of buttonholes from the initial value every time when one buttonhole is sewn. To eliminate the trouble the worker is required to take in setting an initial value of the counter every time when a buttonholing pattern is changed, an initial value of the counter can be set for every buttonholing pattern.
