A cutting machine for sheet material, especially veneer boards, has a frame comprising side members 1, 2 and cross-members 3, 4, the member 4 carrying a fixed lower knife 5 and the member 3 carrying means, not shown, for actuating beams 6, 7 which support movable upper knives 8, 9 respectively. Six hollow cylinders 14 are supported at one end in the member 4 and at the other in fish-plates 13 carried by a cross-bar 12 mounted on supports 11. A supporting bar 15 is mounted above each cylinder 14. In each cylinder 14 a piston 17 having a hollow rod 24 attached thereto is slidable, a further piston 18 having a rod 34 being slidable within the rod 24. A continuous strip of veneer 16 is advanced from a gluing machine over the bars 15 and between the knives 5, 8, 9 and after passing the knives rests on the extended piston rods 24, 34. When a predetermined length of strip has been fed past the knives the latter are actuated so as to cut-off a portion thereof; simultaneously, the rods 24, 34 are retracted into the cylinders 14 and the severed portion 49 of the strip falls on to a pile 50. The rods 24, 34 are then again extended so as to support the oncoming length of strip. The telescopic assemblies are pneumatically operated, air under pressure being supplied thereto through pipes 25, 33 alternately under the control of solenoid-operated valves 27. Measuring wheels 38 rest on the surface of the advancing strip 16 and control the operation of the knives which in turn controls the actuation of the valves 27. The telescopic assemblies are divided into two groups A, B, C, and D, E, F, Fig. 4, each group being controlled by one valve 27. The beams 6, 7 are coupled by locking means 10 if the strip 16 has a width corresponding to the combined length of the knives 8, 9, and the telescopic assemblies A-F are then operated in unison. If the strip is only half this width, however, the beams 6, 7 are uncoupled and one knife 8 or 9 only is used, one group of the telescopic assemblies being disabled. Two narrow strips of veneer may be cut side-by-side into sheets of either the same or different lengths, the knives 8, 9 and the groups A-C, D-F operating independently in the latter case. In a modification, when long sheets are to be cut, an additional range of six telescopic assemblies, identical to the assemblies A-F, is disposed opposite to and aligned with the assemblies A-F, the assemblies being alternately extended towards and retracted away from each other.</p> |
